Technical Glossary
The LHCb experiment is located at one of the four points around CERN’s LHC. LHCb set up is a physics experiment to explore what happened after the Big Bang that allowed matter to survive and build the Universe we inhabit today.
The ESA section is in charge of all survey and alignment for preparatory works during the design, prototyping, tests, assembly, positioning from early stage of the project and during the experiment life.
Linear Accelerator 4 is designed to carry negative hydrogen ions to high energies. It became the proton beam source for the LHC in 2020. Linac4 carries negative hydrogen ions (H-ions, a hydrogen atom and an additional electron) at the energy of 160 MeV before transmitting them to the Synchrotron Proton Booster, which is part of the LHC injection chain.
Shutdown of machines for a period of about 2 years for significant changes.
The MTF application is an integral part of CERN’s Engineering Data Management System (EDMS) and has been developed to capture manufacturing and test data. The basic requirement is to provide traceability for large quantities of complex parts manufactured in many different places and countries. This implies a wide range of data, such as information about the manufacturer, manufacturing procedures, test results, non-compliance reports, etc.
Sub detector of the Muon Forward system in ATLAS constructed in LS2.
Closeness of agreement between indications or measured quantity values obtained by replicate measurements on the same or similar objects under specified conditions (VIM Vocabulary).
A key component of CERN’s accelerator complex, it most often accelerates protons supplied by The Synchrotron Proton Booster or heavy ions from the LEIR. Throughout its history, the PS has juggled with particles of all kinds, either to inject the beams directly in experiments, or for more powerful accelerators.
Smallest change in a quantity being measured that causes a perceptible change in the corresponding indication (VIM Vocabulary)
The RSSO assists the group leader in his/her obligations in terms of safety, with a specific qualification in Radio Protection.
The new validation system for HL-LHC that allows the variation of the water level in the HLS (Hydrostatic Levelling System). It will replace the FPS (Filling Purging Station) of the LHC.
Software used by the ASG section to perform metrology measurements as well as relevant calculations and create a posteriori reports if necessary.
